What is change, and is it a creation of Allah or an attribute of His attributes?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Change is an accidental, not an essential, attribute. Linguistically, it is defined as something being in a state it was not in before.

Terminologically, change refers to two meanings: 1. Impulsive change: A change in the reality of a thing itself, which is called generation and corruption. 2. Gradual change: A change in the quality of a thing while its specific form remains, and this is specifically termed transformation (istiḥālah).

Every change in the universe is from the creation of Allah Almighty, and part of His decree and destiny. Thus, time and action do not fall outside of destiny, and it is incorrect to consider them as two paths to change independent of destiny.

Change can either be an alteration of the form of a thing without changing its essence, or an exchange of it for something else.
