Is it permissible to frequently invoke blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and to cook and exchange a special type of food among relatives and neighbors on the occasion of the Prophet's birthday (Mawlid al-Nabawi)?

Prayers upon the Prophet are among the best acts of worship, and they are always required. Celebrating the Prophet's birthday (Mawlid) is an innovation (bid'ah) that was not practiced by the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, nor by his companions, nor by the imams of the favored generations. Furthermore, according to the majority opinion, it is the day of his passing.
