It is mentioned in revelation that the Children of Israel killed some prophets, but the news of the killing of John (Yahya), peace be upon him, specifically, has not been mentioned in the Quran or the authentic Sunnah. Rather, this news became well-known among the Companions and the Successors. Examples of this include what Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated from Ibn Umar, and from Hisham ibn Urwah, and what Al-Tabari narrated from Ibn Abbas. It is not known whether this news was heard from the Prophet, peace be upon him, or from the People of the Book. The Prophet, peace be upon him, permitted narrating from the People of the Book without confirming or denying it. And the news related by Asma is the strongest evidence for the killing of John, peace be upon him. As for Al-Tabari's narration, it is possible that it was taken from the People of the Book.
