What is the ruling on drinking Egyptian barley beer (Fayrouz), and how can one distinguish the intoxicating type from it?

If a drink is intoxicating, it is impermissible to consume it, whether a little or a lot intoxicates, due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Every intoxicant is unlawful," and "Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, a small quantity of it is unlawful." However, if its intoxicating nature is not established, there is no harm in consuming it, for the default rule concerning things is permissibility unless there is evidence of their prohibition. An intoxicant is identified by its smell, or by the presence of alcohol in it, or by its widespread reputation among people as an intoxicating drink.
