What is the ruling on the custom of cooking fūl (fava beans), chickpeas, and eggs on the tenth of Muharram, and where did this custom originate?

Expanding provisions for one's family and relatives on the Day of Ashura is permissible. There is a hadith (definition) mentioning its virtue, which is considered weak by most scholars, such as Al-Haythami, Al-Bayhaqi, and Ibn Rajab. However, some scholars, like Jabir ibn Abdullah, Ibn Uyaynah, and Ibn Habib, deemed it authentic based on experience, and Ibn Hibban considered it hasan (definition) (good). Ibn Hajar refuted Ibn al-Jawzi's ruling that it was fabricated.

As for the four madhhabs, they have agreed on the desirability of expanding provisions for one's family on the Day of Ashura, as mentioned by Al-Sawi al-Maliki, Sulayman al-Jamal al-Shafi'i, Al-Buhuti al-Hanbali, and Ibn Abidin al-Hanafi, who stated: "The hadith of expanding provisions is authentically established, as affirmed by Al-Hafiz Al-Suyuti."
