What is the definition of a revocable divorce and its duration, and is it permissible for the wife to remain in the husband's house and to leave the house during the waiting period?

Revocable divorce is that in which the husband may take back his wife during her waiting period (iddah) without a new contract. This applies to a divorce that is less than the third pronouncement for a wife with whom cohabitation has occurred. As for a wife with whom cohabitation has not occurred, she becomes irrevocably separated upon the mere pronouncement of divorce.

The duration of the waiting period varies according to the woman's condition. A woman who is revocably divorced must spend her waiting period in her husband's home, and it is not permissible to expel her from it, nor is it permissible for her to leave except with her husband's permission.

There is no mourning (ihdad) for a revocably divorced woman. Rather, it is recommended for her to adorn herself and expose herself to her husband, so that "perhaps Allah will bring about thereafter some new affair."
