What is the difference between Matn al-Jazariyyah, al-Shatibiyyah, al-Alfiyyah, and Tuhfat al-Atfal, and what should be learned from each of them?
The poetic texts (Tuḥfat al-Aṭfāl, Al-Muqaddimah al-Jazariyyah, Al-Manẓūmah al-Shāṭibiyyah) represent a progressive ladder for studying the sciences of Tajwīd and Qirāʼāt. Tuḥfat al-Aṭfāl by Al-Jamzūrī is a concise poetic text on Tajwīd, addressing the rules of the quiescent and intensified Nūn and Mīm, Tanwīn, and the Madds. Al-Muqaddimah al-Jazariyyah by Ibn al-Jazarī is a poetic composition on the science of Tajwīd, covering the articulation points of letters, their characteristics, and the rules of Tajwīd, Tarqīq, Madd, Waqf, and Ibtidāʼ. Al-Manẓūmah al-Shāṭibiyyah by Al-Shāṭibī is "Ḥirz al-Amānī wa Wajh al-Tahānī" concerning the Seven Qirāʼāt, in which he versified Abū ʿAmr al-Dānī's book "Al-Taysīr". A student of the Qur'anic sciences should progressively study these poetic texts after reciting to a proficient shaykh.
