Is it permissible to use a picture of a human as a computer desktop background?

If the image is hand-drawn, it is not permissible due to the generality of the authentic Ahadith that prohibit image-making, threaten image-makers with severe torment, and command the effacement of images. However, if the image is made with a machine, some contemporary jurists have permitted it, considering it a captured shadow and not an act of creation. In all cases, angels do not enter a house in which there is an image.
