Should I answer my parents if they call while I am reading the Quran, or should I continue reading?

If one of your parents calls you while you are reciting the Quran, you must interrupt your recitation and answer them. This is because reciting the Quran is a supererogatory act (nafilah), whereas answering the call of one's parents is obligatory (wajib). Failing to answer them is an act of disobedience (ʿuqūq), which contradicts righteousness and benevolence. It is not permissible to engage in a supererogatory act at the expense of an obligatory one. The story of Jurayj the worshipper is narrated in Sahih Muslim: he did not answer his mother while he was performing his supererogatory prayer, so she supplicated against him. It was established that the correct action for him would have been to answer her, because answering and showing piety to one's mother is obligatory, and disobeying her is forbidden.
