Is zakat due on money from selling an apartment that was bought and sold in installments and used for residence?
If the apartment was purchased with the intention of dwelling or renting it out (for personal use), then there is no zakat due on it. Zakat becomes due on its price (the money received from its sale) if it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold) and a hawl (one lunar year) has passed on it from the day it was sold. However, if it was purchased with the intention of trade, then it is considered among trade goods (ʿurūḍ al-tijārah), and zakat becomes due on it before its sale, upon the passing of a hawl on the original capital. Zakat also becomes due on its price after the sale, upon the passing of a hawl, if it does not fall below the nisab.
