The question

Is it possible to receive the reward for emancipating (40) souls from the descendants of Isma'il, and the reward for (10) slaves, by repeating the remembrance "There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner. To Him belongs sovereignty, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent" one hundred times, based on the understanding of the two hadiths?

The answer

The hadiths mention that whoever says "Lā ilāha illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, wa huwa ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr" (There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise, and He is over all things competent) ten times, it is as if he has freed four souls from the offspring of Isma'il. And whoever says it one hundred times in a day, it will be equivalent to freeing ten slaves for him, and one hundred good deeds will be recorded for him, and one hundred bad deeds will be erased from him, and it will be a protection for him from Satan on that day, and no one will come with anything better than what he came with, except someone who did more than that. Another narration indicated that whoever says it ten times in the morning will have one hundred good deeds recorded for him, one hundred bad deeds erased from him, and it will be equivalent to freeing one slave for him, and he will be protected by it on that day until evening. And whoever says the same in the evening will have the like of it. The reconciliation between the differing narrations regarding the number of slaves can be by preferring the larger number, which is four slaves, or by considering that each ten times is equivalent to one slave, or by the difference in the states of those who remember Allah in their mindfulness of the meanings. As for obtaining a reward equivalent to freeing fifty souls by saying "Lā ilāha illallāh" one hundred times, there is no basis for it.
