What is the ruling on raising one's voice in an obligatory or supererogatory prayer for the sake of attaining humility?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is sunnah to recite aloud in the Fajr prayer, the first two rak'ahs of Maghrib and Isha prayers, Jumu'ah prayer, Eid prayer, and the Eclipse prayer for both the Imam and the person praying alone. It is sunnah to recite silently in all other prayers. Daytime supererogatory prayers are recited silently, while nighttime supererogatory prayers, other than Taraweeh, are recited aloud or with a moderate volume between loud and silent. The regular supererogatory prayers (Sunan Ratibah) accompanying the obligatory prayers are recited silently. The one performing Tahajjud (late-night prayer) has the choice between reciting aloud and silently, taking into account what is more energizing for him or for his listeners, and avoiding harming others. Violating the Sunnah regarding loud or silent recitation does not invalidate the prayer, but it is disliked (makrooh).
