The question

Are the brothers of a sister whose behavior and work are bad, and whose work necessitates her daily travel, sinful for abandoning her and abandoning advising her? And does their sin harm their children and wives? And is there anything else they should do besides advising her, and what is it?

The answer

The husband is responsible for his wife and has guardianship over her; he must prevent her from evil deeds. A revocable divorcee must stay in her home until her ' (waiting period) expires. Relatives are responsible for changing an evil if the husband does not do so, and they must advise her and prevent her from causes of corruption. Some scholars have held that brothers may take custody of their previously married sister if they do not trust her to avoid corruption. The implementation of hudud (prescribed punishments) and ta'zir (discretionary punishments) belongs to the ruler, not to individuals, and children and wives are not held accountable for the crimes of others.
