What is the ruling on dyeing hair with highlights?

"Mèches" is a partial extraction of hair color to lighten it, color it, or conceal white hair. It is done by mixing powder (magnesium carbonate with ammonia) with hydrogen peroxide. A common method for mèches is the rubber cap method, where the hair is combed, the cap is put on, then strands are pulled through with a hook, and the color-removing mixture is applied to them. It is then washed off once the desired shade is achieved. Mèches change the original hair color and it does not revert except with the growth of new hair. It is permissible to use mèches as long as it does not involve prohibitions such as: using black mèches for graying hair, imitating disbelieving women or immoral women, displaying the hair to non-mahrams, or causing harm to the hair.
