Is the story true that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz stepped on a sleeping man in the mosque, whereupon the man asked him: "Are you mad?" and he replied: "No," and Umar prevented his guard from striking the man?

This story was mentioned by Ibn Hibatullah in Tarikh Dimashq with an unspecified chain of narration, and we have not found any scholar who commented on it as weak or otherwise. There is nothing in it that indicates a false meaning in Islamic law, and such humility and forbearance from someone like Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, is not surprising.
