How many years did the public call last?

The Prophet's call (peace be upon him) went through two stages: a secret stage that lasted three years from his prophethood, after the revelation of Allah's saying: (O you who covers himself [with a garment]); and a public stage that began after the revelation of Allah's saying: (So proclaim that which you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists) and continued for twenty years.
