Is it permissible for a pregnant woman to rest or ride during Tawaf and Sa'i if she feels severe fatigue or contractions that could lead to miscarriage or premature birth, given her inability to postpone Umrah?
There is no harm for a woman in separating the circuits of circumambulation (Tawaf) and the striving (Sa'y), or between the Tawaf and the Sa'y, as long as she is harmed by continuous performance, because continuous performance is desirable (mustahabb) and not obligatory (wajib). There is also no harm for her in riding due to an excuse during Tawaf and Sa'y. The scholars have agreed on the validity of the circumambulation of one who rides if there is an excuse. They differed regarding riding without an excuse; the Shafi'is permitted it, while the majority disallowed it, but walking is preferable to all. As for continuous performance between the circuits of Tawaf and Sa'y, and between Tawaf and Sa'y, the Shafi'is and Hanafis held that it is not a condition, while the Malikis held that it is a condition for all. The Hanbalis, however, held that continuous performance is obligatory between the circuits of Tawaf themselves, and similarly between the circuits of Sa'y, without stipulating continuous performance between Sa'y and Tawaf.
