Does cupping therapy invalidate the fast?

Scholars differed regarding whether cupping breaks the fast or not. The majority of scholars held that it does not break the fast, citing the hadith of Ibn Abbas that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was cupped while fasting. Imam Ahmad, however, held that it does break the fast, citing the hadith: "The one who cups and the one who is cupped have broken their fast." The more sound opinion is that of the majority of scholars, for Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar stated that the hadith "The one who cups and the one who is cupped have broken their fast" is abrogated. Some scholars interpreted the hadith to mean that the cupper and the cupped person caused the fast to be broken. It is preferable for one who is weakened by cupping to delay it until night, for fear of being compelled to break the fast, as Ibn Umar did.
