If he dies having abandoned prayer, then how should he be buried?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on one who abandons prayer out of negligence and laziness, while still believing in its obligation. The majority of scholars hold that his disbelief is minor, not expelling him from the fold of Islam. Thus, he is washed, shrouded, prayed over, buried in Muslim cemeteries, and inherits and is inherited from. However, some verifying scholars are of the opinion that he is a disbeliever with major disbelief, so he is not washed or shrouded; rather, he is wrapped and buried in the earth. As for one who denies the obligation of prayer, he is a disbeliever by consensus, and is treated as a disbeliever.
