The answer

Islam permits Khul' (divorce at the wife's instance) as a remedy when marital life becomes impossible to continue and there is a loss of tranquility and affection. This occurs when the aversion is on the part of the wife, so she frees herself from the marriage by returning what she took from the husband, as Allah Almighty said: "And it is not lawful for you to take anything of what you have given them, unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allah. But if you fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allah, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself." The husband's acceptance of the ransom is considered just, given that he expended the dowry and marriage expenses for her.
