If the worshiper is ignorant of the gender of the deceased in the funeral prayer, should he supplicate using the masculine form?

Scholars have differed on whether, if the deceased is female, the pronoun in the supplication should be feminized or if one should adhere to the wording found in the prophetic tradition. Al-Shawkani favored adhering to the wordings found in the tradition, because the word "al-mayyit" (the deceased) applies to both male and female. Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen elaborated that if the gender of the deceased is unknown, it is permissible to masculinize the pronoun with the intention of referring to "the person" or "the deceased," and to feminize it with the intention of referring to "the funeral bier" (al-janazah), and both are correct.
