Was John—peace be upon him—married?

There is no explicit text stating whether John (Yahya), peace be upon him, married or not. Scholars have differed on this matter. Some have said that he did marry, interpreting the description "Hasoor" (chaste/abstinent) applied to him in the Quran as meaning that he did not desire women, or that he married but was not inclined towards them. Others have said that he did not marry, interpreting "Hasoor" as one who refrains from marriage despite being able to, out of devotion and worship to Allah.
