The question

What is the ruling regarding a husband who has been contemplating divorce for a long time due to reasons including psychological discomfort and fear of falling into sin, after meeting another woman whom he has not informed of his marriage, knowing that his country prohibits polygamy, and fearing that the marriage contract with her would be void if it takes place, especially if she stipulates the divorce of the first wife or is a cause for it? Is he obligated to inform her that he is married before completing the marriage with her, taking into account the iddah (waiting period) if divorce occurs?

The answer

Familiarity between marriageable men and women, even if for the purpose of marriage, is a doorway to temptation and corruption. Whoever desires marriage should approach the woman's guardian. The relationship with the girl must be severed, and her guardians should be approached to propose to her. If the second wife is informed of the existence of a first wife, she is not permitted to stipulate the divorce of the first wife; this is a void condition that does not invalidate the contract.

Divorce is permissible when there is a need for it, but it is advisable not to rush into divorcing the first wife. Lowering the gaze from forbidden things helps the husband be content with his wife, whereas letting the gaze wander and speaking with marriageable women makes the husband lose interest in his wife. Achieving affection and understanding requires patience, overlooking mistakes, and focusing on the good aspects.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman. If he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." A person might impulsively pursue a fleeting desire and then regret it, for what is perceived as better may carry flaws and tribulations.
