How should my father pray given that he cannot control his urine and is often unaware of his surroundings?
A father must pray as long as his mind is sound. If he loses consciousness and then regains it, prayer is obligatory upon him during his conscious moments. He should pray according to his ability, standing, sitting, or lying on his side. He should nod for bowing and prostration, making the nod for prostration lower. Whatever conditions and pillars of prayer he is unable to perform are waived for him.
As for purity, if he suffers from urinary incontinence, he should perform ablution after the entry of the prayer time and pray the obligatory and supererogatory prayers with this ablution until the time expires. It is permissible for him to combine two prayers according to the Hanbalis. The criterion for incontinence is not finding sufficient time to perform purification and prayer without the urine exiting.
