Are there restrictions on the length of the engagement period, and is it permissible for a man to propose when he is not fully able to marry, claiming that he will strive to complete his ability during the engagement period, or even if he is completely unable to marry?
The duration of the engagement period is determined by the mutual consent of both parties (the prospective husband and the guardian or the mature woman). There is no objection to prolonging the engagement period if it does not result in harm to the fiancée. It is stipulated that the suitor must not be misleading about his financial situation, claiming ability to cover marriage expenses while being incapable, as this leads to breaking the promise and causing the fiancée to miss opportunities. However, if he is financially incapable and will strive to acquire funds, and the wife's family is aware of this, then there is no objection.
