What is the meaning of the Hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari: "Your remaining time compared to those who have passed is like the time between the Asr prayer and sunset"?

Ibn Hajar mentioned in Fath al-Bari that the meaning of the hadith is that the proportion of the duration of this Ummah (nation) to the duration of previous nations is like the proportion of the time between the Asr prayer and sunset to the rest of the day. He also stated that the word "fi" (في - in) here means "ila" (إلى - to), with the elision of the genitive construct "lafz nisbah" (لفظ نسبة - the word 'proportion' or 'ratio').
