Is a prostrating follower required to perform the prostration of forgetfulness if he made a mistake in reciting Al-Fatihah then corrected his mistake, and if it is obligatory, should he prostrate before or after the salaam with the imam?

According to the Shafi'is, the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw) is a sunnah, not obligatory, and its place is before the salutation (taslim). The prayer is not invalidated by omitting it. The imam bears the forgetfulness of the follower (ma'mum) during the imamate, so the follower does not prostrate for forgetfulness in such a case, for instance, if he forgot the first tashahhud. If the follower remembers omitting a pillar (rukn) after the imamate has ended with the imam's salutation, he performs an extra rak'ah to compensate for the omitted pillar and does not prostrate for forgetfulness. However, the imam does not bear the follower's forgetfulness if it occurs after the imam's salutation.
