Is a woman permitted to seek divorce due to her intense hatred for her husband because of his continuous ill-treatment, especially since her family refuses divorce out of fear for the children, and does the Hadith, "Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without any [valid] reason, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her," apply to her?
It is advised to address the problem with wisdom and gentleness, and to try to remove the causes of the husband's anger, drawing closer to him and making him feel his importance in raising the children. If this method does not succeed, someone who has influence over him can be sent to advise him. If the discord continues and these means are ineffective, it becomes permissible to seek divorce or khul' (divorce at the wife's instance, by giving compensation) in exchange for money, due to the failure to achieve the purposes of marriage, based on the Almighty's saying: (Then there is no blame upon either of them concerning what she gives up to get free thereby) [Quran 2:229], and the Hadith of Thabit ibn Qays.
