How can one distinguish between lawful (halal) and unlawful (haram) work, especially in a context where prohibited and questionable activities, such as selling alcohol and pork, are prevalent? What is the ruling on the permissibility of working in bakeries associated with restaurants that serve pork and alcohol in non-Islamic countries? What is the ruling on the work of a friend who only bakes cheese products in a bakery where pork is served? Is it permissible to visit him and eat from his food, knowing that his wife works in prohibited insurance? What is the ruling on gifts he offers? Is refraining from working in places where there is mixing of sexes or where prayer is prevented considered a correct action?

Work is permissible if it is in a permissible field and does not involve aiding in what is forbidden. As for forbidden work, it is that which involves committing a forbidden act or directly aiding in it, such as working in usurious banks, commercial insurance companies, or carrying alcoholic beverages.

It is permissible for a person to work in a place that sells both permissible and forbidden items, provided that his work is restricted to the permissible only and he does not aid in what is forbidden. However, he should seek another job so as not to witness the objectionable and be unable to denounce it.

The jurists have clarified that working for someone who deals with usury, deception, or similar forbidden things is forbidden, based on the Almighty's saying: (And cooperate not in sin and aggression) [Al-Ma'idah: 2], and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: (Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart).

However, money earned through forbidden means is only forbidden for the earner himself. There is no harm for whoever takes it from him through a permissible means, such as a gift or maintenance.

A Muslim is advised to seek lawful sustenance and avoid doubtful matters, for whoever avoids doubtful matters has cleared himself in regard to his religion and his honor, and whoever falls into them is on the verge of falling into what is forbidden.
