Which is more correct for the worshipper: to pull the worshipper back to align with him, or to push the Imam forward?

The scholars mentioned that whoever finds an Imam and a congregant to his right, he should stand to the Imam's left. Then, if there is enough space in front of the Imam, they should move forward to form a row behind him; otherwise, the two congregants should move back. The correct view is that their moving back is better because the Imam is to be followed and does not move, and the moving forward or backward occurs after the second congregant has started the prayer (made the takbirat al-ihram).
