What is the ruling on studying under teachers who allegorize the attributes of Allah Almighty, such as His Hand and His Istawa' (establishment)?

Those who interpret the Qur’an with interpretations that contravene the understanding of the Pious Predecessors have erred from their path. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions did not allegorize the divine attributes. Otherwise, they would have been either ignorant of the meanings of creed or concealers of the truth, and neither of these befits them.

Our advice to them is to fear Allah and return to the Book of Allah, the Sunnah (definition) of His Messenger, and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. They should know that they are accountable before Allah, and the sayings of so-and-so will not benefit them. Complete faith in Allah and His Messenger necessitates following his Sunnah and not distorting what Allah has described Himself with.

I advise them to abandon every saying that contradicts the saying of Allah and His Messenger, for if they die upon that, they will die upon goodness and truth; otherwise, they are in grave danger. I reiterate the advice to every believer to return to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger in their creed and to what the Imams of the Muslims were upon, who led people by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, without resorting to illusory intellects regarding Allah and His names and attributes. As Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said about the Ash'aris: "They were given understandings but not knowledge, and they were given intelligence but not purity."
