Does the verse "There is no good in responding to the base with humiliation" pertain to Amr ibn al-'As?

The verse mentioned is part of a poem by Abu Firas al-Hamdani, in which the poet refers to Amr ibn al-Aas, may Allah be pleased with him. Al-Tha'alibi mentioned this verse, and al-Abbasi interpreted it to mean that Amr ibn al-Aas avoided a strike from Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, on the Day of Siffin by exposing his private parts. However, this account is from the narratives of poets and litterateurs, and they contain what they contain, especially since the Holy Qur'an states: "And as for the poets, those who go astray follow them. Do you not see that they wander aimlessly in every valley? And that they say what they do not do?" (Surat Ash-Shu'ara, 26:224-226). Furthermore, those who narrated this story were opponents of Amr ibn al-Aas and Muawiyah, and the testimony of an opponent against his opponent is not acceptable. Therefore, caution must be exercised when dealing with these narrations. In summary, this account does not prove anything, especially regarding a noble companion like Amr ibn al-Aas, may Allah be pleased with him.
