What is incumbent upon me and my sister following an abortion that occurred twenty years ago, for a child who was born alive then died, considering that we were ignorant of the gravity of the sin at the time?

If the abortion is performed after four months, it is considered killing a soul and entails blood money (Diyyah) and expiation (Kaffarah). The blood money for the fetus is a "ghurrah" (a male or female slave). If not available, then five camels, as it is one-tenth of the mother's blood money, and its current value is 15,000 Riyals. As for the expiation, it is freeing a slave. If not available, then fasting for two consecutive months. The doctor and the woman share in the blood money if they both participated in the abortion, and the expiation is binding on both of them. The blood money is waived if the fetus's heirs forgive it.
