Who was the first to strike the Messenger?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The first to harm the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after he publicly declared his call was his uncle Abu Lahab. His abuse began with the revelation of Allah's saying: "And warn your closest kindred," whereupon he immediately spoke vile words to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Then, upon the revelation of Allah's saying: "Therefore proclaim openly what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists," the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ascended Mount Safa and called out to the Quraysh. Abu Lahab said to him: "Woe to you for the rest of this day, is this why you gathered us?" and took a stone to throw at him.
