Who was the first prophet and who was the first messenger?

The first of the prophets and messengers is Adam, peace be upon him, because he received revelation and was commanded with a law. The story of his two sons indicates that they had a divine law from Allah. However, the intercession hadith poses a difficulty by stating that Noah was the first of the messengers. This is refuted by the fact that Adam and Seth were prophetic messengers before Noah. But Adam was sent to his believing children to teach them, whereas Noah was sent to the disbelievers among the people of the earth.
