Was Adam a Messenger or a Prophet?

Adam, peace be upon him, was a prophet, and God spoke to him. Evidence for this includes:

1. Allah's statement: (He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth and I know what you reveal and what you have concealed?") [Al-Baqarah: 33]. This direct address from God is a characteristic of prophets. 2. The story of Adam's two sons in His saying: (And recite to them the news of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice) [Al-Ma'idah: 27] up to His saying: (Indeed, Allah accepts only from the righteous). This indicates Adam's conveying a divine law to his sons. 3. Al-Bayhaqi narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Allah the Almighty sent Gabriel to Adam and Eve, and he said to them: 'Build for Me a house...'" And in it, Adam was called: "Enough for you, O Adam," and "Allah commanded him to circumambulate it," and "You are the first of people, and this is the first house established."
