Is it permissible to contribute money to the building of a hall for occasions where mourning ceremonies are held, in which a شيخ (sheikh) recites over the deceased, given that a specific sum of money is imposed on each individual in the neighborhood?
Gathering people for condolences at the deceased's family's home, whether in their house, in marquees, or in an event hall, is not legislated. This is because it is an innovation (bid'ah), and the Companions considered it a form of wailing (niyāḥah). The prohibition is further emphasized if it is accompanied by the bringing of a Qur'an reciter. Furthermore, gathering after forty days of the deceased's passing, reciting the Qur'an for him, and taking payment for it is an innovation and forbidden. It is not permissible to spend on food for those offering condolences or on the expenses of setting up marquees, whether from the deceased's money or otherwise. Imposing a sum of money to build an event hall is an abomination that should not be assisted, as it falls under cooperation in sin and aggression.
