The ' (waiting period) for a divorced woman begins from the moment the husband pronounces the divorce. However, if the divorce is issued by a judge, the 'iddah begins from the time the final divorce decree is issued. The 'iddah concludes after three menstrual cycles for a woman who menstruates, or three months for a woman who does not menstruate, or upon childbirth for a pregnant woman. The husband's absence from his wife does not negate the obligation of the 'iddah, and it is not permissible for a woman observing 'iddah to marry, nor for her to be proposed to, before the 'iddah period has ended. She must also remain in her home.
