Can there be harms in the permissible and benefits in the forbidden?

The consideration for permissible or obligatory matters is the prevalence of benefit, and for forbidden matters, it is the prevalence of harm. Jihad, for example, involves hardship, but its benefit is immense. Allah the Almighty says: "Fighting has been enjoined upon you, though it is hard for you; yet it may be that you hate a thing and it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not." (Al-Baqarah 2:216). As for intoxicants and gambling, they contain some benefits for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit. Allah the Almighty says: "They ask you concerning wine and gambling. Say: 'In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefits for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.'" (Al-Baqarah 2:219). Excessive and pretentious questioning is blameworthy.
