Is it necessary for slaughtering (nahr) to be followed by butchering (dhabh), or is slaughtering (nahr) alone sufficient, and what is the ruling on the method of slaughtering a calf in abattoirs by striking it on the head then slaughtering it (nahr) without butchering (dhabh)?
It is best to slaughter cattle and sheep, and to hamstring camels. The reverse is permissible according to the majority of scholars. If a calf is struck on its head with a hammer and does not die, but remains alive with stable life, and then it is slaughtered, its meat is lawful. It must be known that striking an animal on its head with a hammer is forbidden because it is a form of torture, due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "And when you slaughter, slaughter well."
