Jurists are of the opinion that it is not permissible to force a virgin, who has reached puberty, to marry someone she does not desire. The spouses should strive for stability if they are blessed with children, for building homes is not solely based on love; there are other interests, such as the healthy upbringing of children. It is advised to supplicate and seek someone who can persuade the wife to retract her request for divorce. If she insists, the husband has the right to refuse divorcing her until she offers financial compensation [for khul‘]. A wife leaving to work without her husband's permission is an act of defiance (nushooz). It is not permissible for a woman to request a divorce except for a legitimate Shar‘i reason. If she dislikes her husband, it is permissible for her to seek khul‘ from him in return for compensation, and it is commendable for the husband to agree to her khul‘.
