If one who possesses ill-gotten wealth repents, then if the money was taken by usurpation, aggression, or theft from a known person, it must be returned to him, and there is no need to inform him of this. However, if the wealth was acquired through unlawful transactions, such as selling alcohol, it must be disposed of by spending it on Muslim welfare, such as for the poor, or building mosques and religious schools. It is also permissible to spend it on needy relatives.
