What we issue a fatwa on is that it is menstruation during the time of your regular period, and if it is connected to blood. Based on this, if you saw that brownish discharge outside the time of your regular period, then it is not menstruation. But if you saw it during the time of your regular period, then it is menstruation. All the days you saw the brownish discharge are considered menstruation, and any intervening periods of purity are valid purity. Therefore, you are not required to make up the four days during which you experienced the intervening purity. Rather, you only need to make up the days of menstruation.
