What is the ruling on borrowing something from someone without their permission, with the strong presumption that they would consent?

The basic principle is that it is not permissible to borrow something without its owner's permission, for disposing of another's property without their consent is a transgression forbidden by Islamic law. However, if it is highly probable that the owner would consent, then there is no harm in doing so, and customary permission is considered equivalent to verbal permission.
