What are the characteristics of Abu Hurairah among the Companions?

Abu Hurairah is the Companion Abd al-Rahman ibn Sakhr al-Dawsī. He embraced Islam in the sixth year of the Hijrah and was given the kunya Abu Hurairah because he used to play with a kitten he had. He was distinguished by his extensive memorization of the Prophet’s hadith (peace be upon him), having narrated 5374 hadiths, making him the most prolific narrator of hadith among the Companions. The Prophet’s prayer for him to have a good memory was a blessing. Imam al-Shafi’i said: "Abu Hurairah was the best memorizer of hadith in his era." He stayed close to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and memorized what others did not. Therefore, he said: "Were it not for two verses in the Book of Allah, I would not have narrated any hadith," then he recited: "Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs... to His saying: Most Merciful." The Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed for him not to forget any hadith after he spread his cloak and the Prophet cupped his hands into it, and he never forgot anything thereafter.
