Is a husband entitled to prevent his wife from visiting her family and to only allow phone calls, and will the wife be held accountable if she obeys him in this regard and displeases her family?
Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on a husband preventing his wife from visiting her parents. The preponderant opinion is that the husband must permit his wife to visit her family to the customary extent, unless there is a [potential] harm.
There is no sin upon the wife for obeying her husband by not staying overnight at her parents' house and not repeatedly visiting, even if her family becomes displeased, for the husband's right takes precedence, and obeying him is more obligatory.
It is advisable for the husband to permit his wife to visit her family and stay overnight with them to an extent that fosters companionship and satisfies the parents, and he should not restrict her without justification.
