Is it permissible for an outstanding student who has been granted a scholarship to receive the refunded amount from the university after his tuition fees have been paid by a sponsor, or must it be returned to the sponsor?

If a man undertook to pay your full university tuition fees, and then it became clear that the university only required a percentage of the amount and not all of it, and the university returned the remaining amount to your account; then you are obligated to inform the guarantor of what happened. If he permits you to benefit from the remaining amount, then there is no blame upon you. Otherwise, you must return it to him, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The wealth of a Muslim person is not lawful except what he gives willingly." However, if the guarantor paid the money as a simple gesture and not for a specific purpose, then you may dispose of it as you wish.
