Is sincere repentance sufficient for a man and his wife who committed adultery and were content with it, or is there a prescribed punishment (hadd) or expiation (kaffarah) due upon them, and must they divorce or can they continue their marital life?

Adultery is a major sin, one of the greatest enormities. Its occurrence by a married woman with her husband's consent is an even greater transgression. Both spouses must perform sincere repentance, increase in acts of obedience, and conceal what has occurred between them. For Allah forgives whoever repents, no matter how great their sin. The marriage between them remains valid, but the wife must refrain from intercourse until she has purified herself with one menstrual cycle.
