How can I achieve remorse for a sin, as it is an internal feeling and not an action of my choice, and is it permissible to supplicate to Allah for remorse?

For repentance to be valid, it is stipulated that one must abandon the sin, regret what has passed, and resolve never to return to it. A fourth condition is added if the sin pertains to injustices against people: that is, seeking absolution from the aggrieved party or giving them their due. Regret is the greatest pillar of repentance, and its meaning is sorrow over committing the sin, precisely because it is a sin. Its realization is indicated by abandoning the sin and resolving never to return to it.
