What is the interpretation of the noble Hadith: "Indeed, Allah has distributed among you your character just as He has distributed among you your provisions, and indeed, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, grants the worldly life to whomever He loves and to whomever He does not love, but He does not grant the religion except to whomever He loves. So, whoever Allah has granted the religion, He has indeed loved him...", and does the phrase "Indeed, Allah has distributed among you your character" mean that a person is born with a specific character, like provisions, and then strives to rectify it, or does it have another interpretation, especially given the feeling that Allah does not create anyone with bad character and then hold them accountable for it?

This hadith was narrated by Ahmad and others from Ibn Mas'ud, raised (marfu'), and it was also reported as paused (mawquf) on him through several chains. Its chain of narration includes Al-Sabbah ibn Muhammad, who is weak. He contradicted others who narrated the hadith from Murrah as paused, as words of Ibn Mas'ud. The correct view is that it is paused on him.

Among the ethics and dispositions of people, some are innate and natural, while others are acquired. The Shari'ah has commanded adherence to noble character, which is acquired through striving to adopt good manners (takhalluq), exerting oneself (takalluf), and struggling against the self. People are tested and tried in the application of their character, whether it is good or bad. The person with good character is rewarded for how they utilize it, while the person with bad character is commanded to strive to change it and to be patient in acquiring good character. Some spiritual ailments, if a servant dies patiently enduring them, they are considered a martyr.
